Seller says "no need for inspection, I'm a mechanic"

Post by owenshaw »

I'm looking at a 2014 Nissan Patrol in Baniyas. The seller says he's been a mechanic for 15 years and he's personally maintained the car since new. He says there's no need for a third party inspection because he knows the car inside out and can tell me everything that's wrong with it. He seems like a nice guy but I'm still nervous because everyone has a different standard of what "good condition" means. I found a company that offers Accomplished Car Assessment Baniyas and they can come to his place tomorrow. When I mentioned the inspection, he got a little offended and said I'm doubting his expertise. Now I feel awkward but I also don't wanna skip the inspection just to be polite. Should I insist on the inspection or trust him because he's a mechanic? I've been burned before by a seller who claimed to be a "car guy" and the car turned out to have a ton of hidden issues. I'm leaning toward getting the inspection and if he refuses, I'll walk away. What would you do in this situation? Is it reasonable to still want an independent check even if the seller seems knowledgeable? Thanks for any advice.
